New Users Guide
First of all, let us welcome you to Extreme Web Virtual Hosting. We know that you have made an excellent
choice in making us your Internet Host. Extreme Web has some very innovative features built-in to Virtual
Hosting to give you complete control of your site. Here is an introduction to help you use them.
Getting Started
The first thing that you will need to administer your Web Site is a user name and password. Without either of
these, you cannot control the content of your Web Site. Any time you try to edit or administer your Web Site you
will be prompted for this information. Your User Name will usually be the same as your domain. This
would be yourdomain.com or yourdomain.net etc. You were able to choose your password at the time you setup. If
you do not know either your user name or password, you should contact technical support.
- User Name: yourdomain.com
- Password: sent to you
These credentials will be used to authenticate you when using FTP, FrontPage, or the Administrating Web Site.
Editing Your Web Site
To edit the content of your Web Site, you can use FTP or FrontPage (if it is included with your account).
-
FTP
To use FTP, you will need a FTP client such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP.
Once you have a client installed you can connect to your FTP server with the following information:
- Host or Address: ftp.yourdomain.com
- Port: 21 (if it doesn't ask you, don't worry about it)
- User Name: yourdomain.com
- Password: your password
Once connected and logged in, you will see foure folders:
Go to the html folder. If this is the first time you have logged in, you will not see any files. You can now
begin to upload your html and image files.
Note: Remember to make the first page that you want to see, named index.html, or
go to the Administration Web Site and change your default document.
-
FrontPage
If your account includes FrontPage extensions, you can use the FrontPage Explorer (Available at your local Software Retailer) to view, edit, and administer your
web site. The server has FrontPage 2000 extensions installed, which means you can use any version of FrontPage to connect.
To connect:
- Open the FrontPage Explorer
- Click "Open an Existing FrontPage Web"
- Click the "More Webs" button
- Type in your domain name (i.e. yourdomain.com)
- Click the "List Webs" button, then wait for FrontPage to connect
- Highlight "<Root Web>" then Click OK
- FrontPage will then connect to your Web Site
If you are connecting for the first time, you will not see any files listed. At this point you can edit your
Web Site.
Administering Your Web Site
The central control of your web site is located at
http://www.yourdomain.com/admin/
From here you can control the content of your Web Site, Email Accounts, Passwords, and much more. At the Administration
Service Page you have four options to begin with:
- Web Service - Use this button to control the content, access, file types, etc, of your Web Site. At any
time while administering your site, you can click the
button to give you information about what each button does.
- Mail Service - This option allows you to control the Email Accounts on your domain. You can create, delete,
and modify accounts here.
- File and Quota Service - To see how much disk space your web site is using, and whether you have reached
your quota, use this button.
- Change Domain Account Password - To change the password for your administration account, use this option.
You must enter your old password, then your new password twice to make sure that you have typed it correctly. When
typing your passwords, a * will appear instead of letters for security.
Sending and Receiving Email
You can use any standard email client such at Outlook or Eudora to send and receive mail
- Receiving Mail
Use the following settings to receiving mail:
Server: mail.yourdomain.com
Username: The name of your POP account before the @ symbol (Username for joe@here.com would be simply joe)
Password: Set when you created the POP Account
Sending Mail
You should use your ISPs (Internet Service Provider's) outgoing SMTP server to send email. For example, if you have Earthlink, you should use
smtp.earthlink.net. If you do think that you can use your ISPs mail server, please contact us for information on special ways to use our SMTP
server.
A Note on Security
It is the responsibility of you, the administrator of your web site, to maintain the integrity of your Web Site.
At Extreme Web, we protect all files on the system with tight NTFS security. This does not mean that your files
are always safe however. Make sure that you use the Administration Service to assign proper security rights to your files.
- HTML and Image files: Read access is the only permission needed
- ASP Files: Read and Script access is given
- Custom Programmed Files such as message boards and guest books: This is your discresion, but basic permissions
should probably be Read, Write, and Script
Under no circumstances should the admin directory be given anonymous access. We have hidden checks to make sure
the wrong people cannot administer your Web Site, but you should never need to change the permissions on
this directory.
